Under the guidance of Prim. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andreas Shamiyeh (Kepler University Clinic Linz) and Prof. Dr. Friedrich Herbst and OA Priv.-Doz. Dr. Bernhard Dauser (St. John of God hospital Vienna), the promising results have now been shown for the first time in the renowned Surgical Technology International Journal published. The study examined the accelerated healing process and the reduction of the leakage rate when using the autologous, platelet-rich OBSiDiAN ASG® Biomatrix in the anastomosis.
The first human study that has now been carried out (2018 to 2020) included 261 patients, of whom 177 patients received a left-sided colon resection and 84 patients received a rectal dissection. The OBSiDiAN ASG® Matrix was applied to the rectal stump. In addition, the anastomoses were applied using the intra- and extra-anatomical application (IAA – Intra Anastomotic Application) developed by RiVOLUTiON GmbH. With the application carried out in this way, the study revealed a leakage rate of 2.3% (4/177) and 2.4% (2/84).
This positive result led to the conclusion that the use of an autologously obtained platelet-rich BioMatrix (Obsidian ASG®) for anastomoses is safe and associated with a low rate of anastomotic leakage after colorectal resection.
