Implantable Subcutaneous Port Catheter
The subcutaneous port is a fully implantable system used to deliver drugs into the bloodstream.
Subcutaneous and Implantable refer to the port being placed completely subcutaneously. The port is only visible as a small swelling under your skin. Daily care is usually not necessary and the system does not affect your daily activities. The materials used are of the highest implant quality.
The port catheter consists of 2 parts:
1 - The subcutaneous injection chamber with a self-sealing membrane through which the needle is inserted
2 - A catheter attached to the chamber through which the drugs are delivered directly into the bloodstream.
The doctor will place the port just under the skin in the most suitable place for you. Usually this is on the chest below the collarbone. The catheter is inserted into the blood vessel through a small incision in the skin. The placement is done under local anesthetic and takes about 30 minutes.
Description
Functioning
To gain access to the system, a special needle is punctured. This needle is inserted through the disinfected skin and through the silicone membrane (septum) to the bottom of the reservoir.
The medicines go into the bloodstream through this needle, the reservoir and the catheter.
The care:
After the operation it is best to avoid shoulder movements for a few days and follow the instructions of the doctor and the nurse carefully. You can resume your normal activities. The system should only be used by trained medical personnel. Injections and infusions can be given, but blood samples are also possible. After use, the system is flushed with a special solution. If the catheter is not used for more than 3 months, it should also be flushed. This can be done on consultation or by the home nurse.
